Michigan Winters and Your Auto Insurance

Michigan winters are hard on vehicles, roads, and drivers. The state sees significant ice, snow, and freezing rain from November through March, and accident rates climb accordingly. Before the first serious storm, it's worth running through your auto insurance to make sure you're covered for the things that actually happen in Michigan winters.

This isn't about buying more insurance for the sake of it. It's about knowing what you have so there are no surprises when you need it.

Winter Auto Insurance Checklist

1. Confirm You Have Comprehensive Coverage

Comprehensive covers damage from ice, hail, wind, flooding, and falling objects — all events that spike in Michigan winters. If you dropped comprehensive to lower your premium, you're exposed to storm-related vehicle damage. Pull your declarations page and confirm it's listed.

2. Check Your Collision Deductible

Winter accident rates in Michigan are significantly higher than summer rates. At-fault fender-benders on ice are more common than at any other time of year. If your collision deductible is $1,000 or $2,000, a minor winter accident may still cost you a significant amount out of pocket. Consider whether your deductible reflects your actual risk tolerance.

3. Verify Rental Reimbursement Coverage

If your car is in the shop after a winter accident, rental reimbursement coverage pays for a rental vehicle while repairs are made. Without it, you're covering that cost yourself. Repair shops in Michigan can back up quickly after major storm events — your car could be out of service for a week or more. Check your policy for rental reimbursement and the daily limit.

4. Review Your Roadside Assistance

Roadside assistance covers towing, battery jumps, and lockouts — all of which spike in Michigan winters. Confirm you have this coverage on your policy, or that you have an equivalent membership through AAA or another service. Know the towing distance limit; some policies cap it at 15–25 miles, which can be insufficient in rural Michigan.

5. Check Uninsured Motorist Coverage

Michigan has a significant uninsured driver population. Winter accidents, which tend to happen more suddenly and at lower speeds but with more vehicles involved, can involve uninsured drivers. If your UM limits are low or you've waived UM coverage, you have exposure. This is a good time to review those limits.

6. Understand Your PIP Coverage in Winter Accidents

Michigan's no-fault PIP system covers your medical bills after an accident regardless of fault — which means if you slide on ice and injure yourself, your own PIP coverage is what pays for your medical care. Your PIP level election matters here. If you opted down to a lower PIP level, make sure your health insurance can actually cover what the lower PIP won't.

7. Confirm Coverage on Secondary or Stored Vehicles

If you have a second vehicle you're putting in storage for the winter, you may be able to reduce coverage on it to comprehensive-only (which covers theft, fire, and weather damage while stored). Talk to your agent before making changes — some lenders require full coverage even on stored vehicles.

8. Know How to File a Claim Before You Need To

The worst time to figure out your claims process is standing in a parking lot after an accident in 15-degree weather. Save your carrier's claims number in your phone now. It's on your insurance card and your declarations page. Know whether your carrier has an app for claims filing.

Before Winter: Get a Coverage Review

If you haven't reviewed your auto insurance in the past year — or if you've never had an independent agent compare your coverage across multiple carriers — fall is a good time to do it. Rate changes happen throughout the year, and there may be meaningfully better options available for your situation.

The review is free. The comparison is free. If what you have is already the best option, I'll tell you.
