Michigan Umbrella Insurance: The Coverage That Protects Everything Else

An umbrella policy adds $1 million or more in liability coverage above your auto and home policies for a few hundred dollars per year. Here's why most Michigan families should have one.

What Is Umbrella Insurance?

A personal umbrella policy adds a layer of liability coverage — typically $1 million to $5 million — above the liability limits of your existing auto and home insurance policies. It's called an "umbrella" because it covers across multiple policies: if an auto claim exhausts your auto liability limit, the umbrella picks up the remainder.

For most Michigan families, umbrella insurance costs $150–$350 per year for $1 million in additional coverage. It's one of the best values in personal insurance.

Why Michigan Drivers Especially Need It

Michigan's no-fault system limits many types of lawsuits after auto accidents — but not all. Serious injury and death claims can still result in significant judgments against at-fault drivers. If you cause an accident that injures or kills someone, and the damages exceed your auto liability limits, you're personally responsible for the difference.

Standard auto policies often carry $100,000/$300,000 liability limits. A serious accident can easily exceed these amounts. An umbrella covers the gap.

What Umbrella Insurance Covers

  • Auto liability claims that exceed your auto policy's limits
  • Home liability claims that exceed your homeowners policy's limits
  • Certain types of personal liability claims not covered by other policies (defamation, false arrest, some landlord liability situations)
  • Incidents involving watercraft, RVs, and other vehicles covered under an underlying policy

What Umbrella Insurance Does NOT Cover

  • Your own injuries or property damage
  • Business-related liability
  • Intentional acts
  • Claims covered by workers' compensation

Who Needs Umbrella Insurance?

The short answer: most households with meaningful assets. If you own a home, have savings, or have income that could be garnished in a judgment, you have something to protect. The cost of an umbrella policy is small relative to the financial exposure it prevents.

Specific situations that raise your liability exposure: teen drivers in your household, a swimming pool or trampoline, frequent entertaining at your home, rental property, or high public visibility (a public-facing profession where lawsuits are more likely).

Minimum Underlying Requirements

Umbrella policies require minimum liability limits on your underlying auto and home policies before the umbrella will attach. Typically, you'll need at least $250,000/$500,000 on auto and $300,000 on home liability. Clutch Risk can verify whether your current policies meet these minimums.
