What Is PIP Insurance?

Personal Injury Protection (PIP) is the medical coverage component of Michigan's no-fault auto insurance. After a car accident, your PIP coverage pays for your medical bills, rehabilitation, lost wages, and replacement services — regardless of who was at fault.

Before 2020, Michigan required unlimited lifetime PIP coverage for all drivers. The 2019 no-fault reform changed everything.

Your PIP Options in Michigan

Michigan drivers now choose their PIP level at policy renewal or when purchasing new coverage:

  • Unlimited PIP — no cap on lifetime medical benefits. The most expensive option, but provides complete protection for catastrophic injuries.
  • $500,000 PIP — covers up to $500,000 in medical expenses. For most serious accidents, this is sufficient.
  • $250,000 PIP — covers up to $250,000. A middle ground that reduces premium meaningfully.
  • $250,000 PIP with exclusion — $250,000 limit but excludes a specific named individual who has Medicare or Medicaid.
  • $50,000 PIP — only available if you're enrolled in Medicaid.
  • PIP opt-out — only available if you have Medicare Parts A and B.

How to Choose the Right PIP Level

The right PIP level depends on your health insurance situation. If you have excellent employer-sponsored health insurance with high limits, dropping to $250,000 or $500,000 PIP might make financial sense. If you have limited health coverage or are uninsured, unlimited PIP provides a critical safety net.

Key questions to ask:

  • Does my health insurance cover auto accident injuries?
  • Are there limits or caps on my health insurance that could be exhausted by a serious accident?
  • Can I afford a catastrophic injury if my PIP coverage runs out?

The Premium Savings Are Real

Dropping from unlimited to $500,000 PIP can save hundreds of dollars per year. For many Michigan drivers, this is the single biggest lever for reducing auto insurance costs after the 2019 reform.
